What are the differences between Alkaline and Acidic foods and what does it mean to come into a proper pH Balance to prevent disease?

Everything we put into our mouth is used by our body, for better or for worse. If the goal is to have a healthy, vibrant body, then we must feed our body the foods that supply the proper nutrients to work with. In addition, our body environment must maintain an adequate acid/base (pH) level, in order for our systems to run optimally. 4 This is why it is important to choose a diet low in acidity and high in alkalinity.

Foods with high acidic levels cause toxicity of the blood and other important body fluids. 1 Acidity corrodes and breaks down the vital channels (i.e. the vascular system, lymphatic system, circulatory systems) and the organs of the body, promoting a weakened immune system and disease. 2 The Standard American Diet causes an increase in acid loads with its processed foods and excess amount of protein, and its lack of vegetables and other alkalizing foods.

Our body is always working to maintain optimal health and an optimum range of pH. It naturally uses its resources to dispose of acid loads through the lungs, kidneys, skin and through buffer systems in body fluids, but this becomes extremely difficult when we are constantly and continuously adding toxins to our body. Alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are used by our body fluids to neutralize acids as a part of the elimination process. A healthy diet would normally provide these minerals, but when we are not taking in a sufficient amount from our diet, they are taken from our bones, muscles, and organs. This causes long term health concerns such as osteoporosis and other mineral deficiencies. 3 Weight gain is another effect of an acidic diet. When the body receives food with high pH acid, it creates fat cells to store the acid.1

Alkaline forming foods counteract acidity. An alkaline state is achieved through a proper diet and supports healing and prevention of disease since the body’s natural immune system is not being hindered or impaired. 2 When the body’s pH is slightly alkaline (has over 7 and under 7.5 pH), oxygen is carried to our tissues and our enzymes stay active which maintains a speedy reaction in our body, allowing it to execute essential normal functions. A healthy functioning body equals a disease-free, vibrant body.

We can achieve such a balance by switching most of our acidic foods to more alkaline foods. Adding dark leafy greens and any other high chlorophyll substances are essential to a good alkaline pH within the body. You can also decrease or let go of large meat portions and add vegetable portions, switch processed snacks for raw fruits and veggies or smoothies, and add lemon to your water or food since lemon is one of the most alkalizing fruits. 1

It is crucial to increase water consumption in addition to consuming alkaline forming foods. This will support the body’s capability to discard acids. Dehydration hinders the expulsion of waste products through the kidneys, which causes an accumulation of wastes in other organs and tissues and diminishes their function. Drinking alkaline water or simply alkalizing your water with lemon supports with flushing the acid from the kidneys, as well as raising the pH of the body. 3

There are many resources on the internet that provide lists of alkaline foods. Although most Americans’ bodies are suffering from outrageous amounts of acid loads, you have the power to alkalize your body, and return to the healthy, vibrant body you deserve.
